Mackenzie’s whiskers twitched, a subtle tremor that Elara, despite her growing familiarity with the Homancats, would have missed entirely had she not been watching him. His emerald eyes, usually alight with a playful spark, were narrowed, fixed on a point beyond the dense foliage that shielded their makeshift camp. A low rumble, barely audible over the chirping of unseen insects, vibrated in his chest.
“Trouble,” he murmured, his voice a soft rasp against the humid air. “Ragnar. He’s close.”
Rousey, ever vigilant, had already risen, her lithe form tensed. She offered Elara a curt nod, her gaze sweeping the perimeter. “How close?” she asked, her tone flat, devoid of the usual warmth she reserved for Elara. A flicker of something unreadable crossed her face as she glanced at Elara, a fleeting shadow that Elara couldn’t quite decipher. Was it concern? Or something else?
