The air hung thick and cloying, a miasma of damp earth and something acrid, like old blood and fear. Emerald Crystal, her limbs heavy and her mind a fog of exhaustion, found herself dragged across rough ground. The coarse fur of her captors brushed against her skin, each touch a jolt of revulsion. She’d been careless, a fatal flaw in this world. The oasis, so promisingly serene, had been a trap. Ragnar’s clan, a pack of shadows and fangs, had descended with terrifying speed, their guttural roars echoing the primal terror that clawed at her throat.

Rousey and Mackenzie were nowhere to be seen. Had they been captured too? Or worse, had they abandoned her? The thought was a fresh stab of despair. She’d begun to trust them, to let down her guard just enough to feel a flicker of hope. Now, that hope was being systematically dismantled, piece by agonizing piece.

They shoved her into a cavern, the entrance a gaping maw in the side of a rocky outcrop. The interior was dimly lit by phosphorescent moss clinging to the damp walls, casting an eerie, sickly green glow. It was a holding pen, a place of waiting. And the wait, she was quickly learning, was the cruellest part.
