The air in the oasis shimmered, a welcome balm after the relentless sun of the thornwood. Emerald drank deeply from the crystal-clear pool, the water a cool kiss against her parched throat. Lush, emerald-green foliage, impossibly vibrant against the ochre hues of the surrounding desert, framed the small, secluded haven. It felt like a dream, a brief respite from the constant gnawing fear that had become her unwelcome companion.

Rousey, ever vigilant, sat a little apart, her emerald eyes scanning the perimeter, her tail giving an almost imperceptible twitch. Mackenzie, perched on a low-hanging branch of a flowering tree, groomed his sleek, obsidian fur, his movements fluid and unhurried. They had led her here, to this hidden sanctuary, after a harrowing chase through the treacherous thornwood, their agility and knowledge of the terrain saving her life more times than she could count.

“It’s… beautiful,” Emerald breathed, the word catching in her throat. She dipped her hands into the water, marveling at its purity.
