The hum was almost imperceptible at first, a faint tremor beneath Elara’s fingertips as she traced the intricate circuitry etched into the water city’s central console. It had been a silence so profound, so absolute, that its eventual awakening felt like a dream. Beside her, Kael’s breath hitched, a soft sound in the vast, echoing chamber. Years of dusty tomes and hushed whispers had led them here, to this silent monument to a lost people, and now, finally, a flicker of life.
“It’s… it’s responding,” Elara breathed, her voice barely a whisper, yet it seemed to fill the cavernous space. Kael, ever the pragmatist, was already leaning closer, his keen eyes dissecting the shifting patterns. “Not just responding, Elara. It’s booting up. Re-initializing. This isn’t a simple power surge. It’s a system coming back online.” He tapped a section of the console, his finger tracing a sequence of symbols that Elara recognized from her grandfather’s most obscure journals. “These are diagnostic protocols. It’s assessing its own integrity, its operational status.”
