The biting wind whipped Kevin’s hair across his face, stinging his eyes with salt spray. He huddled deeper into his worn cloak, the rough wool scratching against his chin. The journey across the vast, churning ocean had been long, filled with the creaks and groans of the ship, the constant sway that threatened to throw him off balance, and the gnawing emptiness in his belly. But now, New England. Or at least, the promise of it. The air tasted different here, sharper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a stark contrast to the briny breath of the sea.

The settlers bustled around him, their faces etched with a mixture of relief and trepidation. They were a hardy lot, these men and women who had braved the unknown for a new life. Kevin, at ten years old, felt like a small, insignificant pebble amidst their determined stride. He clutched his tattered sketchbook tighter, its pages filled with the only true escape he’d found on the ship – his drawings. Creatures of ink and imagination, born from the quiet hours spent sketching by the dim lantern light, safe from the prying eyes of the grown-ups.

Pip, his latest creation, was a creature of pure fancy. A blend of a squirrel and a hummingbird, with fur the colour of twilight and wings that shimmered like dragonfly wings. He’d drawn Pip just yesterday, a small, bright spark of joy in the otherwise grey monotony of their arrival. He’d tucked the sketchbook away, a secret treasure, only for Pip to… well, only for Pip to be real. It was still a dizzying thought, a secret that felt too enormous for his small chest.
