Chapter 6
A Secret Companion
Kevin discovers his drawing, a small, shy creature he names Pip, hiding nearby. He must keep Pip a secret from the stern settlers, especially Silas, who distrusts anything out of the ordinary.
The salt spray still clung to my clothes, a damp reminder of the ocean’s vast, indifferent embrace. New England. The words themselves felt heavy, alien, a landscape etched not by my hand, but by the stern pronouncements of the elders. We were here, the 56 men and I, our feet sinking into soil that smelled of pine and damp earth, a scent so different from the familiar dampness of England’s moorlands. My drawing, the one that had danced into life on the deck of the *Wanderer*, was still tucked away, a secret held tight against my ribs. I’d named him Pip, a small, shy sound that mirrored the creature’s own tentative existence.
He was a curious thing, Pip. Not quite bird, not quite mouse, with fur the color of twilight and eyes like polished obsidian that seemed to drink in the world. He’d emerged from the paper that morning, a rustle of unseen movement near my sleeping roll. My heart had leaped into my throat, a frantic drumbeat against the quiet dawn. He was small enough to fit in my cupped hands, his tiny body trembling. I’d scooped him up, his fur surprisingly soft, and he’d nudged against my palm, a silent plea for reassurance.
The settlers were a gruff lot, their faces weathered by the voyage and the grim determination to carve a life from this wild land. They spoke in hushed tones, their eyes constantly scanning the dense woods that pressed in on our meager encampment. Suspicion was a constant companion. Silas, the man with eyes like chips of flint and a beard that seemed to hold the shadows of countless doubts, was particularly watchful. He’d scowled at my sketches before, his lips thinning when he saw the fantastical beasts I conjured with my charcoal. “Frivolous nonsense,” he’d muttered once, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down my spine. “Distractions from the serious work of survival.”
