The air in our small cabin, usually thick with the scent of damp wood and the faint, lingering salt of the sea, now carried a different perfume. It was the subtle, sweet aroma of dew-kissed clover and something else, something wild and untamed, like the heart of a forest after a summer rain. Pip, my little ink-born friend, had brought it with him. He’d unfurled himself from the confines of my worn sketchbook, a shimmering, opalescent creature with wings like a dragonfly’s and eyes that held the deep, unfathomable blue of a twilight sky.

He’d materialized not from my charcoal sketches of ships or the rough portraits of the settlers, but from a whim, a doodle I’d made when the monotonous days at sea had begun to wear on my spirit. Or the time he’d chirped a soft, musical note in his sleep, a sound unlike any bird I’d ever heard, and Silas had paused his mending, his brow furrowed as he scanned the deck. I’d quickly coughed, a loud, rasping sound, and pretended to be choking on a crumb of hardtack.
