The air in New England tasted different. Sharper, cleaner, laced with the scent of pine needles and something wild I couldn’t quite name. It was a tang that settled into my lungs and made me feel more alive than the stale, salt-laced air of the *Wanderer* ever could. He was no bigger than my two hands cupped together, with fur the colour of twilight and eyes like polished obsidian. He moved with a silent grace, a whisper of movement that could evade the most prying gaze. He’d been my shadow since that bewildering morning, a constant, comforting presence in the bewildering newness of this land.
