The air in our small cabin, always thick with the scent of damp wool and stale bread, now felt heavy with something else – a dread that clung to me like sea spray. Silas’s words, sharp and accusing, echoed in my mind, each one a tiny, stinging pebble thrown at the fragile shell of my secret. He had seen it, or at least, he had seen *something*. The way he’d looked at me, his eyes narrowed, searching my face as if I were a riddle he was desperate to solve, had sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the chill of the New England autumn.

I clutched the worn leather-bound sketchbook to my chest, its familiar weight a small comfort against the rising panic. Pip, nestled just beneath the cover, was as still as a shadow, his tiny, velvety ears pressed against the page. He had been so agitated earlier, a low, rumbling purr of unease vibrating through the wood. He knew. He always knew when danger was near, his senses far keener than mine.

“It’s alright, Pip,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “We’re safe here. For now.”
