Chapter 17
Silas's Confrontation
Silas finally corners Kevin, demanding answers about the strange events. Kevin must decide whether to reveal his secret or find a way to protect Pip and his magic from Silas's judgment.
The air in the new settlement, usually alive with the clang of hammers and the murmur of anxious voices, seemed to hold its breath. A stillness had fallen, thick and heavy, like the fog that sometimes rolled in from the sea, muffling all sound and sight. Kevin felt it in his bones, a prickling unease that had been growing for days, ever since Silas had started watching him. Not just glancing, but *watching*. His stern, weathered face, usually set in a mask of grim determination, now held a glint of something sharp and unnerving whenever it landed on Kevin. The whispers, too, had become more frequent, more pointed. They slithered through the rough-hewn cabins and around crackling fires, snagging on Kevin’s name like burrs on wool.
He clutched his worn leather-bound sketchbook tighter, the familiar weight a small comfort against the burgeoning dread. Pip, nestled in the hollow of his tunic, stirred with a tiny, almost inaudible chirp. Kevin gently stroked the soft, downy feathers, a silent promise to protect him. Pip was his secret, his joy, his impossible friend. And Silas, with his hawk-like gaze and his unyielding rules, felt like a storm cloud gathering directly over their fragile world.
The confrontation, when it came, was swift and silent. Kevin was sketching by the edge of the woods, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows that played tricks on his eyes. He was trying to capture the intricate patterns on a fallen leaf, Pip perched on his shoulder, occasionally nudging his ear with a curious beak. Suddenly, a shadow fell over his page, eclipsing the sun. He looked up, his heart leaping into his throat. Silas stood before him, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable but undeniably intense. Behind him, a few other settlers, their faces etched with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, had gathered, drawn by the unspoken tension.
