The air in our small, hastily constructed cabin hung thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a constant reminder that we were no longer on the rolling, salty expanse of the ocean, but firmly planted in this wild, untamed land. Silas had decreed that all newcomers were to share cramped quarters, a measure he claimed was for safety, though I suspected it was more about keeping a watchful eye. Pip, bless his shimmering, scaled hide, usually stayed tucked beneath my worn tunic, a warm, rustling presence against my skin. But tonight, the confines felt suffocating.

A commotion erupted outside, a sudden surge of anxious voices and the clatter of hurried footsteps. I peered through a crack in the rough-hewn timber walls. A group of settlers, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and grim determination, were gathered around the edge of the clearing. Even from my vantage point, I could feel the tension radiating from them.

"What is it?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. Pip stirred, his tiny, multifaceted eyes blinking in the dim light filtering from the lanterns.
