Chapter 14
Guardians of the Grove
Deep within the forest, Kevin and Pip encounter other beings, perhaps drawn by Pip's magic. These encounters are mysterious, hinting at a hidden world connected to Kevin's drawings.
The air in the forest was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles, a perfume far richer than the salty spray of the sea. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a tremor of both excitement and unease through me. Pip, perched on my shoulder, his small, feathery ears twitching, seemed to share my apprehension, his large, luminous eyes darting into the shadowed depths. We pushed through a curtain of ferns, their fronds cool against my face, and emerged into a small clearing. It wasn’t like any part of the woods I’d seen before. The trees here were enormous, their bark like the wrinkled skin of giants, their branches reaching so high they seemed to scrape the very sky. Sunlight dappled the ground, illuminating patches of moss that glowed with an unnatural, emerald hue. And in the center of the clearing, a single, ancient oak stood sentinel, its trunk so wide it would take ten men to encircle it.
