The afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the worn rug, dappling the room with warm, golden light. Elara sat beside her grandmother, the familiar weight of the wooden beads cool against her skin. A quiet, comfortable silence had settled between them, the kind that only deep affection can weave. Elara traced the smooth, dark surface of a particular bead, its grain worn soft by countless touches. It was a little darker than the others, almost the color of rich soil after a spring rain. She remembered her grandmother’s stories, how each bead held a piece of their family’s journey, a whisper of faith, a captured moment. But today, a different kind of quiet was in the air, a hush that felt heavier than usual. Her grandmother’s breathing was shallow, and her eyes, usually so bright, seemed to hold a distant, weary gaze.

“Grandmother,” Elara began softly, her voice barely disturbing the stillness, “are you alright?”

Her grandmother turned her head slowly, a faint smile touching her lips. “Just resting, little one. Sometimes, even the strongest trees need to rest their branches.” She reached out a frail hand, her fingers brushing against the beads Elara held. “You are holding them tightly today.”
