Chapter 4
The Grandmother's Strength
Elara observes her Grandmother facing hardship with quiet resilience. She notices how the Grandmother touches her own necklace, a silent testament to inner peace found through faith.
The air in the small cottage, usually alive with the scent of baking bread and drying herbs, felt heavy. Elara watched her Grandmother from the worn armchair, her small hands clasped tightly in her lap. Outside, the wind howled like a lonely wolf, rattling the windowpanes, and inside, a quiet sorrow had settled, thick and grey as the winter sky. Elara’s father had been gone for many weeks, a journey that was meant to be short but had stretched into an endless absence. Her mother’s smiles were rarer now, her eyes often distant, fixed on a horizon Elara couldn’t see.
But Grandmother, Grandmother was different. Even as her face held a gentle sadness, her spirit seemed untouched by the encroaching gloom. She moved with a quiet grace, her hands busy with mending socks or stirring a pot on the hearth, her movements steady and sure. Elara noticed, with a child’s keen observation, the way her Grandmother’s fingers, gnarled with age and work, would often drift to the wooden beads that lay nestled against her chest. It was a necklace much like Elara’s own, though older, the wood darker, polished smooth by countless years of touch.
One afternoon, as Elara sat near the hearth, tracing the familiar patterns of her own wooden beads, her Grandmother sighed, a soft, melodic sound that didn’t carry the weight of despair. She was looking out the window, her gaze fixed on the skeletal branches of the old oak tree.
