Chapter 16
The Next Generation's Gaze
A new child, perhaps Elara's own niece or nephew, shows a keen interest in the necklace. Elara sees her Grandmother's eyes in theirs, recognizing the cycle of legacy.
Elara sat by the window, the late afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows across the polished wooden floor. The air was still and warm, carrying the faint scent of drying herbs from the garden. In her lap, the necklace lay, a familiar weight against her fingers. The smooth, worn wood of the beads, each one a shade of amber, russet, or deep mahogany, felt like home. She traced the gentle curve of a particularly dark bead, its surface polished to a soft sheen by countless touches. It was a bead her grandmother had often pointed to, a bead that held the story of a long-ago harvest, of a family gathered close, their laughter echoing in the quiet fields.
A small sound from the doorway drew her attention. Little Leo, her nephew, stood there, his eyes wide and curious, fixed on the necklace in her hands. He was a whirlwind of energy most days, chasing butterflies and building forts in the meadow, but now he was still, a tiny statue of wonder. He padded closer, his bare feet making no sound on the wood, until he was right beside her chair. His gaze, so earnest and direct, reminded Elara so strongly of her grandmother. It was the same intensity, the same quiet thoughtfulness that had always made Elara feel seen, truly seen.
“What is that, Elara?” Leo’s voice was a soft murmur, barely disturbing the peaceful hush.
