The Grandmother, frail but peaceful, passes on her necklace to Elara, entrusting her with its legacy. Her final words emphasize the enduring power of memory and belief.
The air in the room was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something sweet and gentle like sun-warmed hay. Elara sat beside her grandmother’s bed, her small hands clasped tightly in her lap, her gaze fixed on the woman who had been her world. Grandmother’s face, usually alight with stories and smiles, was now etched with a profound stillness, her breathing soft as a moth’s wings against the windowpane. Yet, her eyes, though clouded with age, held a familiar warmth, a deep well of love that Elara could always swim in.
“My little sparrow,” Grandmother whispered, her voice a fragile thread of sound. She reached out a hand, papery thin and cool, and Elara placed her own into it, her fingers instinctively finding the familiar comfort of her grandmother’s touch. “You have grown so much, haven’t you?”
Elara nodded, unable to speak past the lump that had formed in her throat. She had grown, yes, but she still felt so small, especially now, when the biggest tree in her forest seemed to be fading.
