Chapter 6

The Lantern's Glow

Elias prepares for the public reading at The Lantern, confronting his past through the voices of strangers and the final echoes of Clara's poetry. The Shadow of the Past makes one last attempt to unravel him, but Elias finds strength in the warmth of shared stories and the tangible presence of his audience. The chapter ends with Elias stepping onto the stage, ready to speak Clara's words aloud.

The days that followed the phone call were a slow, deliberate unfolding, like petals of a flower that had waited too long for the sun. Elias moved through his apartment with a new lightness, his steps no longer burdened by the weight of shadows. He cleaned the dust from the windowsills, washed the dishes that had accumulated in the sink, and even bought fresh flowers—white lilies, Clara's favorite—placing them in a simple glass vase on the desk where the typewriter sat. The apartment, once a prison of memories, began to feel like a home, a sanctuary where the past could rest without haunting the present.

Margaret Chen sent the details via email, a printed page that Elias held in his hands as if it were a sacred artifact. The reading was scheduled for a Thursday evening, two weeks away, at a venue called The Lantern. The address was in the old part of the city, a district of cobblestone streets and gas lamps that had been preserved as a tribute to a bygone era. Elias had never been there, but the name stirred something in him—a warm, flickering light against the darkness, a beacon for lost souls.

He practiced the poems every day, his voice growing steadier with each repetition. He started with the earliest fragments, the ones that had come to him in dreams, raw and unshaped. Then he moved through the middle verses, the ones where the Dream Woman had begun to take form, her presence a balm to his wounded spirit. Finally, he arrived at the last poems, the ones Clara had written, the ones that had been hidden in the journal, waiting for him to discover them. He read them aloud, and each time, he felt her voice merge with his, a duet of the living and the dead.
