The chipped porcelain cup felt cool against my palms, a small anchor in the swirling sea of my thoughts. Outside, the rain had begun, a soft, insistent drumming against the windowpanes of Aunt Clara’s small, impeccably tidy living room. It was the kind of rain that seeped into things, into the very bones of houses and the corners of hearts, and today, it felt like it was trying to seep into me. Aunt Clara, her silver hair pulled back into its usual neat bun, sat across from me, her knitting needles clicking a rhythm that was both familiar and, today, jarringly out of sync with the disquiet in my chest.

“Elias, dear,” she began, her voice gentle, like the worn velvet of her armchair, “you haven’t touched your tea. Is it too strong?”

I managed a weak smile. “No, Aunt Clara. It’s perfect, as always.” I picked up the cup, the warmth a faint comfort. The truth was, my appetite had dwindled to nothing in recent months. The opulent meals Isabella had once so enthusiastically shared now felt like ashes in my mouth, and even Aunt Clara’s simple, nourishing fare seemed to sit heavy.
