The air in my tower had always been still, a perpetual twilight where dust motes danced in beams of light that never quite reached their zenith or nadir. But lately, a tremor had begun, a subtle vibration that hummed beneath the stone, a discord in the otherwise perfect symphony of my solitude. Elias. His presence, even from afar, was a stone dropped into the placid pool of my existence, sending ripples that threatened to break the surface.
He was here again. I knew it not by sight, but by the prickling sensation on my skin, like static electricity gathering before a storm. He was a historian, he’d told me, his voice a clear, resonant bell that had chipped away at the silence I’d so carefully cultivated.
