Chapter 6
Blooming in Her Own Way
Symali learns that her unique path is her strength. She discovers that blooming doesn't mean being like everyone else, but embracing her true, wonderful self, disability and all.
Symali sat by the gnarled roots of the ancient oak, tracing patterns in the damp earth with a twig. The Whispering Woods, once her vibrant playground, now felt like a vast, silent observer of her quiet despair. Barnaby the badger, ever the loyal companion, nudged her hand with his wet nose, a soft rumble of concern in his chest. “Still no blooming, Symali?” he asked, his voice a gentle murmur against the rustling leaves. Symali sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand unbloomed wildflowers. “It’s no use, Barnaby. My petals are all tangled. I don’t know which way to unfurl.”
Her mind, a kaleidoscope of dazzling ideas that usually danced with such joyous abandon, now felt like a tangled skein of yarn, impossible to unravel. One moment, she’d be sketching visions of fantastical winged creatures, the next, composing a melody that echoed the wind’s song. Then, the sharp sting of reality would return, reminding her of the clumsy way her legs refused to carry her as they once did, the way her hands sometimes fumbled with a paintbrush, the way her thoughts scattered like startled birds. The world expected a certain kind of bloom, a steady, predictable unfolding. Her bloom, however, felt more like a wild, unpredictable explosion of colors, too many to hold, too chaotic to arrange.
Elder Elara, her eyes like twin pools of ancient moonlight, had spoken to her just yesterday. She’d sat by Symali’s side, her voice a soothing balm, weaving tales of rivers that carved their own paths, of mountains that stood in their unique majesty, and of stars that twinkled with their own individual brilliance. “My dear Symali,” Elara had said, her hand resting lightly on Symali’s, “a wildflower does not compare itself to the cultivated rose. It grows where it is planted, reaching for the sun in its own inimitable way. Your gifts are not meant to be confined to a single pot, nor forced to bloom on a timetable that suits others.”
