Chapter 7
The Unseen Witness
The boar observes the jubilant crowds, the red flags replaced by the tricolor. It carries the forest's wisdom, a symbol of Lithuania's untamed spirit, into this new, hopeful era.
The air vibrated, a low thrumming that I felt in my tusks, in the very marrow of my bones. It wasn’t the familiar rumble of distant tractors or the crackle of a farmer’s bonfire. This was different. It was a nervous energy, a tremor that had been building for moons, and now it was breaking like a dam. The scent of pine needles and damp earth was still strong, but it was overlaid with something else – a sharp, metallic tang of sweat and fear, and beneath that, a wild, intoxicating perfume of… hope.
I pushed through a thicket of ferns, their fronds brushing against my bristly hide like nervous fingers. The forest floor, usually a tapestry of rustling leaves and scuttling insects, was unnervingly quiet. Even the birds seemed to have hushed their songs, as if holding their breath. Concepts as alien to my boar-mind as the moon, yet they pulsed with a raw power that resonated deep within me.
Then, the sound. A distant roar, growing louder, a tide of human voices. Curiosity, a dangerous but irresistible force, pulled me forward. I crept to the edge of the woods, my snout twitching, my keen eyes peering through the dense undergrowth. The scene that unfolded was a tangle of colour and chaos.
