The First Sunrise of Freedom
The boar greets the dawn, the sun rising over a newly independent Lithuania. The light feels different, brighter, carrying the promise of a future built on courage and self-determination.
The first hint of dawn tickled the eastern sky, a delicate blush of rose and gold bleeding into the inky canvas of night. I stirred, my bristly hide catching the cool, damp air of the forest floor. The usual symphony of rustling leaves and chirping crickets felt different today, hushed, as if the very trees held their breath. For weeks, a strange energy had vibrated through the woods, a restless hum that mirrored the unease in my own gut. It was a feeling I’d known before, a primal sensing of change, of something vast and powerful shifting beneath the surface of things.
I’d seen the two-legged creatures, the humans, moving through the trees with a new urgency. Their whispers, usually a low murmur carried on the wind, were now sharp, fervent, laced with a hope that tasted like the first berries of summer. They spoke of a word I didn't quite understand, "nepriklausomybė," a sound that rolled like thunder in their throats, yet carried a lightness too. They looked at the sky, at the distant villages, with eyes that held a fierce, unyielding flame.
One evening, the air crackled with a different kind of energy. The acrid smell of fear mingled with the sharp tang of determination. I’d been foraging near the edge of the forest when the sounds reached me – the heavy thud of boots, the sharp barks of commands in a language that scraped against my ears, and then, the defiant shouts of the humans. Crouching low, I peered through the dense undergrowth.
