The air tasted different, sharper, carrying the scent of pine needles and damp earth, yes, but also something else, something new. A hollowness. I’d been drawn to the edge of the woods, where the trees thinned and the familiar, grunting life of the forest gave way to a strange, silent clearing. It was here, nestled against the rolling hills, that I found them: the empty barracks.

They stood like brittle skeletons against the sky, their grey concrete walls stained with moss and the relentless Lithuanian rain. Once, they had pulsed with noise – the heavy thud of boots, the sharp bark of orders, the clatter of metal. These sounds, I’d learned, were the sounds of the men who wore the stiff, dark uniforms, the ones who sometimes strode through the forest with their rifles, their faces grim and unyielding. Their scent, a mix of sweat and metal and something acrid, had always warned me to keep my distance, to melt into the undergrowth.

But now, silence. A profound, echoing silence. Doors hung open, gaping like mouths that had forgotten how to speak. Windows were dark, reflecting nothing but the passing clouds. The scent that had once been a warning was now just a faint memory, a ghost of old fear. I nudged a loose piece of metal with my snout, the clang unnaturally loud in the stillness. It was a hollow sound, like the barracks themselves. This was a place that had lost its purpose.
