The rustle of leaves under my hooves used to be a familiar song, a melody of the deep woods. But lately, the tune had changed. It was still the forest, my forest, but the rhythm was different, a nervous tremor beneath the usual hum of insects and birdsong. The air itself felt thinner, charged with something I couldn’t quite name, something like the electric crackle before a summer storm, but without the promise of rain. The distant metallic clang of machinery, once a rumble of an unwelcome presence, now sounded less like a threat and more like… effort. Like humans were *making* things, not just taking them.

I snuffled at a patch of damp earth, digging for roots. The scent of pine needles and decaying leaves was strong, a comfort. But woven through it were other smells, too – the faint whiff of woodsmoke, not the acrid smoke of burning buildings, but the clean, crisp scent of hearth fires. And sometimes, carried on the breeze, came the murmur of voices, hushed but not fearful. They spoke of things I didn’t understand, words like "Laisvė" and "Nepriklausomybė," their tones a curious mix of longing and a fragile, budding joy. It was a scent of hope, I decided, a new kind of wildness blooming in the human heart.

I remembered the days when the forest floor trembled with the heavy boots of soldiers, their metallic scent sharp and alien. Their harsh shouts had echoed through the trees, silencing the birds and scattering the deer. But those sounds were fading now, like the last light of a dying sun. Instead, I heard the rhythmic thud of axes, the high-pitched whine of saws, and the low, steady hum of engines that seemed to be *building* rather than destroying. The humans were rebuilding their world, piece by piece, and the forest, which had always been their silent witness, was now a backdrop to their renewed efforts.
