Chapter 6
Playful Divine Interventions
Isis, drawn to Khepri's innocence, subtly enhances the amulet's magic. Joyful, wondrous events bloom across the land, a testament to the beauty of shared power and a gentle nudge from the lonely goddess.
The air in Khepri's village shimmered, not with the usual heat of the sun, but with a new, playful kind of magic. It was as if the very colours of the world had decided to dance. The papyrus reeds along the Nile, usually a steady green, now rippled with shades of sapphire and emerald, their tips tickling the sky like a child’s giggles. Even the desert sand, usually a uniform ochre, sparkled with tiny, fleeting rainbows that winked into existence and then vanished, leaving behind a trail of sweet, floral scent. Khepri, clutching the humming amulet, felt a tickle in their own chest, a mirroring of the land’s newfound exuberance.
Isis, from her celestial perch, watched Khepri with a gentle curiosity. The child’s innocence was like a cool balm on her ancient, lonely heart. She hadn’t intended to interfere so directly, but the amulet, now tethered to Khepri’s spirit, pulsed with a shared energy, a conduit for her own quiet desires. She missed the warmth of connection, the simple joy of shared laughter. Ra’s reign had been one of grand pronouncements and sun-baked order, but it had lacked this delicate, whimsical touch. She willed it, softly, a thought as light as a feather, and the world responded.
Across the village, the baker, a stout man named Horem, found his dough rising with an astonishing vigour. It swelled and puffed, not just in the heat of his oven, but in the very bowls where it rested, forming whimsical shapes of smiling suns and playful scarab beetles. When he pulled his loaves from the oven, they were golden brown and smelled of honey and starlight, and when children bit into them, they found tiny, sweet berries hidden within, like delightful surprises. Horem, bewildered but beaming, declared it a gift from the gods, though he couldn’t quite say which ones.
