The air in the scribe’s chamber, usually alive with the rustle of papyrus and the soft scratch of reed pens, seemed to hold its breath. Khepri clutched the amulet, its gentle hum a familiar thrum against their palm, a stark contrast to the weighty silence that had fallen. Elder Thoth, his eyes like pools of ancient ink, regarded Khepri with a gaze that held both kindness and a deep, knowing sorrow.
