Chapter 13
Isis's First Smile
Witnessing the shared joy and wonder Khepri cultivates, Isis experiences a genuine smile. The loneliness that fueled her rise begins to recede, replaced by a nascent understanding of companionship.
The air shimmered, not with the usual heat of the desert sun, but with a soft, opalescent glow that seemed to emanate from everything at once. Khepri watched as the river, usually a steady, deep blue, now swirled with ribbons of amethyst and rose. Fish, painted with patterns that belonged in a dream, darted through the water, leaving trails of tiny, sparkling stars. It was all Khepri’s doing, of course, or rather, the amulet’s doing, and Khepri’s willingness to let the gentle magic bloom.
From her high perch, amidst the swirling colours of the sky, Isis watched. She had seen Khepri’s hands move, seen the child’s eyes widen with wonder as the world responded. And in turn, the world had responded to Isis too, not with fear or awe, but with a quiet, growing curiosity. The loneliness that had settled upon her like a shroud, a cold, heavy cloak woven from the silence of her ascended throne, began to feel a little less suffocating.
Khepri, perched on a bank of impossibly soft, moss-green sand, giggled as a lotus flower, larger than any Khepri had ever seen, unfurled its petals with a soft sigh. Inside, instead of stamens, sat tiny, plump scarab beetles, each one painted in a different shade of sunrise. They wiggled their antennae, blinking their little jewel-like eyes at Khepri. This was more than just magic; it was a conversation, a shared secret between the child, the amulet, and the goddess who now watched from above.
