Detective Morales arrived in Valle Gris like a gust of cold, damp air. His car, a practical, dark sedan, crunched to a halt outside the small, perpetually shadowed police station. He was a man carved from granite and skepticism, his face a roadmap of grim experience, his eyes sharp and missing nothing. The local sheriff, a man whose face seemed perpetually etched with worry, met him with a handshake that was more of a plea for help.

“Detective Morales, thank God you’re here,” Sheriff Brody stammered, his voice raspy. “This… this is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

Morales grunted, his gaze sweeping over the sleepy, almost unnervingly quiet town. Valle Gris. Even the name felt like a sigh of resignation. “Start from the beginning, Sheriff. And leave out the fairy tales.”
