The air in Sofía’s room felt thick, heavy with the unspoken dread that had settled over Valle Gris like a shroud. Moonlight, usually a gentle caress, now seemed to probe the shadows, highlighting the dust motes dancing in its pale beams. Sofía lay awake, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. The whispers were louder tonight, a discordant symphony of sibilance weaving through the silence. They weren’t just sounds; they were tendrils, insidious and cold, slithering into the corners of her mind. They knew her name. They knew her fears. And tonight, for the first time, they spoke of a place, a specific, desolate point on the outskirts of town, a place where the old, abandoned mill stood like a skeletal sentinel against the bruised sky.

*“Come,”* they hissed, a chorus of spectral voices, each one a sliver of ice against her sanity. *“Come to the place where the silence screams.”*

She sat up, the rough cotton of her sheets a familiar anchor in the swirling chaos of her thoughts. Every instinct screamed at her to stay put, to lock her door, to pull the covers over her head and pray for dawn. But the desperate curiosity that had always been her curse, and now, perhaps, her only weapon, gnawed at her. The whispers had led others to their deaths, their final moments marked by terror and a cryptic note. But they had also spoken of a pattern, of disappearances, of a presence that moved in the liminal spaces between seconds. And they had called her name. If she was already a target, then hiding was merely delaying the inevitable. Perhaps, just perhaps, confronting the source was the only way to break free.
