Chapter 16
Escalating Terror
The killer's methods become bolder, the attacks more frequent. The entity behind the whispers seems to be feeding on the growing fear, its power amplified by Sofía's proximity to the truth.
The air in Valle Gris had always been thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a comforting, familiar perfume. Now, however, it carried a new, acrid undertone, a metallic tang that spoke of something deeply wrong. The whispers, once a phantom annoyance, had solidified into a palpable dread, a constant hum beneath the surface of everyday life. Sofía felt it in her bones, a chilling resonance that vibrated with the frantic pulse of the town.
The latest victim, old Mr. Henderson, had been found in his greenhouse, surrounded by the skeletal remains of what were once vibrant tomato plants. His eyes, wide and staring, seemed to reflect a horror that transcended the earthly. A single, crisp note lay on his chest, the familiar, chilling inscription stark against his worn flannel shirt: "Escuchaste los susurros." He’d been a quiet man, a widower who spent his days tending his small garden, his only companions the buzzing of bees and the rustle of leaves. Now, he too had joined the silent chorus of the town’s departed.
Sofía found herself walking the familiar path to Elena’s ramshackle cottage, her heart a leaden weight in her chest. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the cobblestones themselves were sinking under the collective burden of fear. The town was a tinderbox, and the whispers were the spark. Elena’s door creaked open before Sofía even knocked, the old woman silhouetted against the dim interior, her eyes, ancient and knowing, fixed on Sofía.
