The rain had begun again, a relentless drumming against the windows of Detective Morales’s cramped office. It was the kind of rain that seemed to seep into the very bones of Valle Gris, mirroring the damp, persistent dread that had settled over the town like a shroud. Sofía sat opposite him, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The air between them was thick with unspoken anxieties, a fragile truce formed from shared fear and a desperate need for answers.

“You’re saying,” Morales began, his voice a low rumble, a stark contrast to the usual gruffness, “that you *heard* them. Not just the wind, not just your imagination playing tricks. You heard voices.”

Sofía nodded, her gaze unwavering. "They’re not tricks, Detective. They know things. Things about me. Things about… them.” She gestured vaguely, her eyes flicking towards the window as if expecting to see a shadow lurking just beyond the glass. "They knew about Mrs. Gable’s cat. The one she lost last year. They whispered its name. And they whispered about Mr. Henderson’s gambling debts. Things no one outside their families could possibly know.”
