The air in Valle Gris had always held a certain stillness, a quietude that bordered on the unnerving. Now, however, that stillness was a tangible thing, a heavy blanket woven with threads of fear. Sofía felt it in the way the wind refused to rustle the leaves, in the unnatural silence of the birds, in the way the townsfolk moved with a new, furtive haste, their eyes darting into every shadow. It was the stillness before a storm, or perhaps, the stillness of a predator waiting for its prey.

She walked through the market square, the usual bustle replaced by sparse, hushed conversations. A week had passed since the disappearance of old Mr. Henderson, the baker, the fourth victim, and the terror had solidified into a gnawing dread. His shop, usually overflowing with the comforting scent of yeast and sugar, remained shuttered, a stark reminder of the void left behind. And with him, the note: "Escuchaste los susurros."

Sofía clutched her worn leather satchel tighter, her knuckles white. The whispers. They had become a constant, insidious presence in her life. No longer confined to the dead of night, they now crept into the periphery of her awareness during the day, formless, disembodied voices that slithered just beyond comprehension. They knew her name. They knew her fears. And they were growing bolder.
