Elena’s cottage was a testament to a life lived in the quiet embrace of forgotten things. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating shelves crammed with brittle leather-bound books and curios that seemed to hum with an ancient energy. The air was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something deeper, like the earth after a storm. Sofía stood by the hearth, the cold seeping into her bones despite the sputtering fire, her gaze fixed on the old woman who sat hunched in a high-backed chair, her face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and sorrow.
“You say they’ve been here for a long time,” Sofía began, her voice barely a whisper, as if afraid to disturb the slumbering spirits of the place. “These… whispers?”
Elena’s gnarled fingers tightened around the smooth wood of her cane. Her eyes, the colour of faded denim, held a profound weariness, a weight that seemed to press down on her very soul. “They are the echoes of what was,” she rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “The old ones. They were here before Valle Gris, before the first stone was laid.”
