Pip was the first to break the morning silence, his tail flicking as he patted over sun-drenched roots. “Rise and shine, future legendary stag!” He poked his nose into my elbow, making me laugh despite the flutter in my chest. Last night’s magic still shimmered in my bones, like the last notes of a song not quite faded.

Odessa sat cross-legged, braiding a thin cord of willow bark. Torin, already up, leaned against the big stone with her name on it, eyes bright beneath tangled curls. My parents. My wild, wonderful parents. I watched them, warmth seeping through me, but a small ache lingered—how could I ever fit among them, truly? I was still learning everything they seemed to know instinctively.

My hands twisted the willow leaf, the locket, the moonstone. My treasures. Pip hopped onto my knee. “You’re quieter than a hedgehog in a hayloft. Where’s your mind, Nova?”
