Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Beneath the Willow’s Shadow
Nova, having learned of her family’s shapeshifting lineage and her own role as the bridge between woods and people, wakes in the glade to a new restlessness. Guided by Pip and subtle signs, she explores the woods with her parents, Torin and Odessa. In the heart of the forest, a mysterious disturbance—a hush in the birdsong, a strange mark on an old stone—leads them on a search for the source. Nova learns from her parents about the family’s ancient pact and discovers she can sense hidden truths. Together, they confront a silent, ancient spirit bound by the same promise as her ancestor Eirlys, and Nova listens to its sorrow. By offering understanding, she renews the pact between the guardians and the woods. The chapter ends with Nova holding a glowing willow leaf, feeling the weight and hope of her role, as Pip hints there are still mysteries to come.
I didn’t expect the world to change just because I knew who I was. Pip says even foxes wake up hungry, no matter how many secrets they know, and I guess he’s right. Morning in the willow glade looks just like any other—sunlight winking through the branches, dew shining on Pip’s red fur. But inside, something feels different. New. A little wild and a little wonderful.
After our night beneath the roots, my heart hums with quiet promise. Odessa’s song floats in my mind—soft as moss, round as the moonstone in my palm. Torin and Odessa sit nearby, sharing raspberries and smiling in that knowing way grownups do. Pip bats at a beetle, and for a moment, all seems perfectly ordinary.
Except…it isn’t. My feet itch. My ears strain for something hidden. I want—no, I need—to understand what it truly means to be the bridge. Not just in stories or songs, but today, for real.
