The air in this strange new place was thick, heavy with a silence that pressed in on Elara, deeper and more absolute than any quiet she had ever known. It was a silence that wasn’t empty, but filled with the ghosts of unspoken words, of moments that had frayed and snapped, leaving jagged edges in her memory. The Realm of Echoes, the Guardian had called it, and now she understood why. It was a place where the past didn't just linger; it breathed.
Shadows, not of trees or clouds, but of her own making, began to coalesce in the periphery of her vision. They were indistinct at first, like smudges on a windowpane, but as she stood there, a cold dread creeping up her spine, they began to take shape. They were the faces she had tried to forget, the scenes she had desperately pushed to the farthest corners of her mind.
There, in the shifting gloom, she saw her father’s face, not as she remembered him in his final days, frail and distant, but as he was in her childhood – strong, his laughter a booming melody that had once filled their small home. But then, the image warped. His eyes, once so full of warmth, turned away, a shadow of disappointment clouding them. She heard the echo of his voice, not in anger, but in that quiet, weary tone that had always cut her deeper than any shout: "Elara, why can't you just… be more like your sister?"
