The air within the ruin was thick, not with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves that Elara knew so well, but with a cloying, metallic tang that prickled her nose. It clung to her cloak, to the strands of blue and purple in her hair, and most disturbingly, to her very breath. Before her, cradled in a nest of gnarled, blackened roots that seemed to writhe with a life of their own, lay the artifact. It pulsed with a sickly, violet light, a captured storm of malevolence that cast long, dancing shadows across the crumbling stone.

This was the heart of the blight, the nexus from which the creeping darkness had spread its tendrils throughout Eldoria. Elara could feel the forest’s pain thrumming through the soles of her worn boots, a silent, agonizing plea. The artifact’s glow intensified, and a whisper, like dry leaves skittering across stone, slithered into her mind.

*“See what you protect,”* it hissed, the voice devoid of warmth, like ice shards grinding together. *“Frail things, easily broken. This power… it can make them strong. Unbreakable.”*
