Chapter 6
Traps of Time
The ruins are laced with ancient traps, designed to deter intruders. Elara's keen observation and connection to the earth help her navigate pressure plates, hidden pits, and enchanted barriers.
The air within the forgotten ruins was thick, heavy with the dust of ages and the unsettling stillness of a place long abandoned. Each breath Elara took felt like drawing in the very breath of sorrow that clung to the crumbling stones. Her boots, usually so sure-footed on the mossy earth of Eldoria, now crunched on grit and fragments of what might have once been ornate mosaics. The blue of her cloak seemed to dim in the oppressive gloom, the frost-white fur around its hem catching only the faintest glimmers of light that dared to pierce the choked canopy far above. Her striking hair, a cascade of sapphire and amethyst, felt heavy against her brow, as if absorbing the weight of the ancient despair. The circlet upon her head pulsed with a faint, sympathetic warmth, a reminder that she was not entirely alone in this desolate place.
She moved with a predator’s grace, honed by years of silent observation in the woods. Her eyes, the color of deep forest pools, scanned every shadow, every uneven surface. Eldoria had whispered its distress to her, a low thrum of sickness that had led her here, to this place where the very stones seemed to weep. Now, the ruins themselves seemed to guard their secrets with a fierce, ancient malice.
A subtle shift in the texture of the flagstones beneath her right foot sent a jolt through her. Her senses, attuned to the slightest tremor of the earth, screamed a silent warning. She froze, her body coiled like a spring, her gaze fixed on the spot. Slowly, deliberately, she shifted her weight, her movements so fluid they were almost imperceptible. The stone gave a soft, grating sigh, and a hairline crack appeared, widening into a narrow chasm that yawned open at her side. It was a pressure plate, cunningly disguised, designed to send unsuspecting intruders plummeting into the darkness below. Elara’s heart, which had leaped into her throat, settled back into a steady rhythm. The woods, even in their sickness, had taught her patience, and this place demanded it tenfold.
