Chapter 14
The Artifact's Song
The obsidian artifact cracks, releasing the trapped darkness. It transforms, its malevolent pulse softening into a gentle hum, a rediscovery of its original, benevolent purpose.
The obsidian artifact, once a gaping maw of shadows, began to tremble. It was as if the very earth beneath Elara’s worn boots vibrated with a silent, agonizing tremor. The creeping darkness that had clung to its surface like a shroud, a suffocating velvet of despair, now seemed to writhe and contort, no longer content with mere containment. A faint, almost imperceptible crack appeared, a hairline fracture tracing a jagged path across the artifact’s polished, starless face. Then another. And another. They spread like frost on a windowpane, each fissure a testament to the immense pressure building within.
Elara watched, her heart a hummingbird trapped within her chest. Her fingers, still tingling with the residual warmth of her purifying flames, clenched into fists at her sides. The air grew heavy, thick with an unseen energy that prickled her skin and whispered of ancient, forgotten things stirring from their slumber. The shadowy creatures that had lurked in the periphery of the ruin, their forms indistinct and menacing, now recoiled, their wisps of smoke seeming to dissipate in the face of this internal upheaval. They were not beings of pure darkness, she realized with a dawning clarity, but rather manifestations of the blight, bound to its will. And now, their master was changing.
With a sound like the sigh of a dying star, the obsidian artifact fractured further. It wasn't a violent explosion, but a slow, deliberate unraveling. The darkness, no longer a cohesive entity, began to pour from the cracks, not in a torrent of malevolence, but in shimmering tendrils of iridescent mist. It swirled around the artifact, coalescing, transforming. The oppressive weight in the air lightened, replaced by a strange, expectant stillness. Elara held her breath, her cerulean eyes wide with a mixture of awe and trepidation.
