Chapter 9
The Sprites' First Flickers
The Glimmer Sprites, drawn by the unusual sounds, watch Lily. Her infectious joy is foreign yet captivating. A faint, almost forgotten warmth begins to stir within them, causing their dim lights to pulse.
The air in the Whispering Woods, usually a thick blanket of hush, vibrated with a sound so foreign, so utterly out of place, that it made Barnaby the badger’s whiskers twitch with indignation. It was Lily, of course. Even now, after the initial shock of her laughter had rippled through the very roots of the ancient trees, she hadn’t stopped. It wasn't a wild, uncontrolled guffaw, but a series of bright, tinkling peals, like tiny bells being shaken by a playful breeze. She’d found a particularly mossy log and was attempting a rather wobbly cartwheel, her legs flailing in the air like a startled starfish.
Hidden amongst the ferns, their delicate wings fluttering with a nervous energy, were the Glimmer Sprites. They were usually so adept at blending into the muted greens and browns of the forest floor, their own dim lights barely a flicker against the perpetual twilight. But today, something was different. Lily’s laughter, a vibrant, unrestrained sound, was like a beacon, drawing them out of their shadows. They watched her, their large, luminous eyes wide with a mixture of fear and fascination. This was not the hushed, serious world they knew. This was… LOUD. And strangely, wonderfully, warm.
A tiny sprite, no bigger than Lily’s thumb, dared to inch closer. Her light, usually a faint, misty glow, pulsed with a sudden, almost painful intensity. She felt a strange sensation, a tickle deep within her chest, an echo of a feeling she couldn’t quite name. It was a warmth, a stirring, like a seed pushing through frozen earth. She looked at Lily, who had just landed her cartwheel with a clumsy tumble, her face flushed with exertion and pure, unadulterated glee.
