Barnaby the badger was, to put it mildly, flummoxed. The Whispering Woods, his domain of solemn silence and carefully cultivated seriousness, was currently in an uproar. Giggles bounced off ancient oaks like rogue acorns, chuckles tumbled down mossy slopes, and a full-blown symphony of snorts and guffaws was echoing through the trees. It was, to his bristly fur, utter chaos. And it was all Lily’s fault.

He’d tried. Oh, how he’d tried! He’d puffed out his chest, he’d scowled his fiercest scowl, he’d even recited the Rules of Solemnity at top volume. But nothing had worked. Lily, that effervescent, giggling whirlwind, had simply… giggled harder. And with each peal of her laughter, the very air around them seemed to shimmer and crack. The Glimmer Sprites, who had been huddled together like forgotten dewdrops, were now darting about with newfound sparkle, their tiny wings a blur of iridescent joy. They were actually *chasing* each other, something Barnaby hadn't witnessed in… well, in longer than he cared to remember.

He watched, his whiskers twitching with a mixture of horror and something disturbingly akin to… amusement. A particularly loud guffaw erupted from a cluster of ferns where a group of sprites were wiggling their antennae in unison, and Barnaby felt a strange sensation bubble up in his chest. It was like a fizzy drink he’d accidentally swallowed, a tickle that refused to be suppressed. He tried to stifle it, clamping his jaws shut, but it was no use. The sound escaped him, a rough, rusty rumble that startled even himself.
