Elara traced the smooth, worn surface of a bead, its familiar texture a comfort against her fingertip. She was fifteen now, and the world, which had once seemed so clear and full of her grandmother’s gentle wisdom, had become a tangled, shadowed place.

The whispers of the wood, once so clear and comforting, seemed to have faded, replaced by the harsh, discordant chatter of the school hallway. It was there, amidst the lockers and the hurried footsteps, that the first real cracks had appeared in Elara’s unwavering belief. It had started with Mrs. Gable’s history class. The teacher, a woman with sharp eyes and an even sharper tongue, had a way of dissecting everything, leaving no room for wonder or faith.

"Superstition," Mrs. Gable had declared one afternoon, her voice echoing in the hushed classroom. They were discussing ancient artifacts, and Elara, in a moment of youthful bravado, had spoken about her grandmother’s necklace, about the stories held within the wood, the strength it offered. Mrs. Gable had merely raised an eyebrow. "A charming fable, perhaps," she'd said, her gaze sweeping over Elara. "But in the real world, Elara, things are not so simple. We rely on facts, on logic, not on trinkets and old wives' tales."
