Liam traced the rough grain of the workbench with a calloused thumb. The scent of sawdust and varnish, usually a comforting balm, felt heavy in the air today, thick with unspoken anxieties. Outside the small workshop, the late afternoon sun cast long, dancing shadows across the cobbled street, but inside, a different kind of darkness seemed to gather. He’d been working on the intricate carving of a bird’s wing for what felt like hours, the delicate details blurring before his eyes. The commission was a big one, a set of ornate wooden panels for the new town hall, and the deadline loomed like a thundercloud. Yet, his mind wasn’t on the precise curve of the feather or the smooth polish of the wood. It was, as it so often was these days, on Elara.

But lately, he’d seen a new depth to her resilience, a quiet strength that radiated from her even when life threw its harshest blows.

He’d heard about her grandmother’s passing, of course. It had been a sorrowful time for the whole village, but Elara had carried it with a grace that both humbled and bewildered him. While he’d wrestled with a gnawing emptiness, a sense of something irrevocably lost, Elara had spoken of peace, of a continued presence. He’d tried to understand, to grasp the words she’d offered about faith and memory, but they’d felt like distant stars, beautiful but beyond his reach.
