The air around the willow seemed to thicken, no longer just a gentle breeze but a tangible presence that pressed against Elara’s skin. It was more than just the rustling leaves; there were sounds, faint at first, like the distant murmur of a crowd, or perhaps the sigh of a thousand lost souls. She’d tried to ignore them, to dismiss them as the tricks of an overwrought imagination, a mind seeking patterns where none existed. But the whispers persisted, weaving themselves into the fabric of her days, a constant, insistent hum beneath the surface of Havenwood’s deceptive calm.

Today, they were louder, clearer. As she walked the familiar path towards the ancient tree, a name, barely audible, brushed against her ear. *“Thomas…”* It was a man’s voice, rough, laced with a desperation that mirrored her own, yet entirely alien. The wind, or what she desperately wanted to believe was just the wind, tugged at her hair, and for a fleeting moment, the leaves of the willow seemed to shimmer with an unnatural light, like embers caught in a draft.

She stopped, her hand instinctively reaching out as if to ward off an unseen blow. The tree loomed before her, its gnarled branches reaching like skeletal fingers towards the bruised twilight sky. It was a place of secrets, she knew that now. Not just secrets that belonged to Havenwood, but secrets that were intrinsically hers, buried deep beneath layers of denial and fear. The whispers were no longer abstract; they were coalescing, forming fragments of memory, sharp and painful as broken glass.
