Silas Abernathy’s study was a sanctuary of forgotten things. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of leather-bound books, brittle maps, and curiosities gathered from Havenwood’s quiet corners. The air itself seemed thick with the scent of aged paper and the faint, lingering aroma of pipe tobacco. Elara sat opposite him now, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the chill of the room seeping into her bones despite the warmth of the afternoon sun outside. He had invited her here, a rare gesture, and she had accepted, a knot of apprehension tightening with each step she took toward his door.

“You see, Elara,” Silas began, his voice a low rumble, like pebbles shifting in a riverbed, “the Willow… it has always been a focal point. Not just for the town, but for many families who have lived here, generations upon generations.” He gestured to a faded photograph on his desk, a sepia-toned image of a solemn-faced woman standing before a much younger, sparser-looking willow. “This was my great-aunt, Agnes. She… she had a particular fascination with the tree. Some said she spoke with it.”

Elara’s breath hitched. “Spoke with it?” The words felt too familiar, too close to the truth she was desperately trying to outrun.
