The dusty archives of Havenwood’s historical society felt like a tomb, each brittle page a sigh from a forgotten era. Mr. Abernathy, his spectacles perched precariously on his nose, hunched over a ledger thick with the scent of time and decay. Elara watched him, a knot of apprehension tightening in her chest. She’d come seeking answers, but the weight of the past pressed down on her, heavy and suffocating.
"It's here," Abernathy murmured, his finger tracing a faded line of script. "The Croft name. It appears with alarming regularity in matters of… acquisition. Land deals, business partnerships, often leaving a trail of disgruntled parties."
Elara leaned closer, her breath catching. Croft. The name itself felt like a shard of ice in her memory, though she couldn't place why. "Acquisition? What kind of acquisitions?"
