The worn leather of the town archives felt strangely alive beneath Elara’s fingertips, a faint tremor resonating from its aged pages. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating rows upon rows of forgotten stories. The whispers, usually a soft murmur at the edge of her hearing, seemed to coalesce here, weaving themselves into the very fabric of the air. They spoke of desperation, of shadows, and of a bargain struck in the deepest night.

She had spent days poring over brittle newspapers and faded council minutes, Old Man Hemlock’s reluctant guidance a constant, gruff presence. He’d pointed her toward the earliest records, his eyes, usually sharp and knowing, clouded with a deep, unreadable sadness. “Look for the lean years, girl,” he’d grumbled, his voice like stones grinding together. “When folk were willing to do anything for a crumb, or for a breath of hope.”

And she had. The year 1888. A year of blight, of gnawing hunger, of a sickness that stalked the edges of Willow Creek like a hungry wolf. The official records spoke of hardship, of prayers unanswered, but the whispers… the whispers hinted at something far more deliberate. They spoke of a child, a little girl named Lily, whose laughter had once filled the very house Elara now called home. They spoke of her vanishing, swallowed by the encroaching darkness.
