The air in the old house felt heavy, not with dust or disuse, but with a sorrow that clung to Elara like damp wool. The locket, nestled in her palm, pulsed with a faint, icy warmth. It was no longer just an antique; it was a key, a conduit, a silent scream from a time long past. The whispers, once just indistinct murmurs, now coalesced into fragments of a desperate plea, a promise made in the darkest hour. “Never leave us,” they seemed to sigh, “keep him safe.”

Elara traced the intricate, faded engraving on the locket. It depicted a small, impossibly delicate bird, its wings outstretched as if in flight, or perhaps, in a desperate attempt to escape. But protection, Elara was beginning to understand, had come at a terrible price.

She walked through the silent rooms, the floorboards groaning beneath her feet, each creak a sympathetic sigh. Her own fragmented memories, usually so elusive, felt sharper now, tinged with a familiar ache. A child’s laughter, quickly stifled. A shadowy figure, cloaked and hurried. A desperate embrace. These weren’t just dreams; they were echoes, imprints left behind by the very forces that now stirred Willow Creek.
