A Gentle Nudge

The scent of aging paper and lemon polish was usually a balm to my frayed nerves, a gentle, predictable perfume that clung to the quiet corners of the Oakhaven Library. But today, it felt thin, unable to mask the gnawing unease that had settled in my chest like a cold stone. I ran a dust cloth over the worn mahogany of the circulation desk, my movements automatic, my mind a turbulent sea. The hushed rustle of turning pages, the distant murmur of Mrs. Gable at the front desk – sounds that had once soothed me now seemed to amplify the silence within me.

Mr. Silas arrived, as he always did, just after eleven. His gait was a little slower than usual, a slight stoop in his shoulders that hadn't been as pronounced last week. He carried his worn leather satchel, its contents a mystery I’d long since stopped trying to decipher. He nodded to Mrs. Gable, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he offered a soft greeting. Then, his gaze found me. It wasn't a demanding look, more an acknowledgement, a gentle probe. He walked towards the fiction section, his usual haunt, and I busied myself straightening a display of new arrivals, my heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against my ribs.

He settled into his favorite armchair, the one by the window that offered a sliver of sunlight even on the cloudiest days. He didn't immediately reach for a book. Instead, he sat for a long moment, his eyes closed, his breathing deep and measured. It was during these quiet interludes that I felt his presence most acutely, a steady anchor in my own drifting existence. I found myself stealing glances, a foolish habit I couldn't break.
