The air in the small café hung thick with the scent of roasted coffee beans and something sweet, perhaps cinnamon. It was a comforting aroma, one that usually settled my nerves, but today, it did little to soothe the tremor in my hands. I traced the rim of my untouched teacup, the porcelain cool against my fingertips. Oakhaven, with its quiet streets and gentle rhythm, had begun to feel like a sanctuary, a place where the jagged edges of my past might soften. But the past, I was learning, had a way of finding you, even in the most unassuming of corners.

Mr. Silas had suggested this meeting. "A gentle introduction, Elara," he'd said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Eleanor is a good woman. She, like you, has known her own share of storms." He hadn't elaborated, and I hadn't pressed. He knew, I suspected, that the less I knew, the better I could navigate this uncharted territory. David’s wife. The mother of the son I had so carelessly pushed away. The thought tightened my chest, a familiar ache of regret blooming anew.

And then she was there. A woman of quiet grace, her presence filling the small space between tables without being intrusive. She had a kind face, framed by dark hair streaked with silver, but her eyes, a soft shade of hazel, held a guardedness that mirrored my own. She offered a small, hesitant smile as she approached my table, her movements deliberate, as if she were testing the ground with each step.
